Antigen v. Antibody

This device tests for antigens, not antibodies, which can detect a prior infection but do not confirm a current infection. Testing for antigens detects ACTIVE and contagious infections in just 15 minutes. Antibodies resemble immunity to a virus by detecting antibodies in the blood, and the tests are not used to diagnose for an infection. They can be useful in tracking the spread of a disease, but not diagnosing active infections. Additionally, it is much more likely to have inaccurate results when testing for antibodies. However, antigens are only detected when the infection is active, and disappear with the infection. The results from antigen tests are highly accurate.

What is a PCR test?

PCR test. Also called a molecular test, this COVID-19 test detects genetic material of the virus using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A fluid sample is collected by inserting a nasal swab (nasopharyngeal swab) into your nostril and taking fluid from the back of your nose or by using a shorter nasal swab (mid-turbinate swab) to get a sample. Results may be available in few days or longer if sent to an outside lab. PCR tests are very accurate when properly performed by a health care professional.
